What Is Hydrogenated Ethylhexyl Olivate (and) Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifiables? (Trade name: Ecosil)

Scary-sounding names. Beautiful, thoughtful ingredients.

Hydrogenated Ethylhexyl Olivate (and) Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifiables (trade name: Ecosil) may look intimidating on an ingredient label, but it’s actually a beautifully simple, plant-derived ingredient.

Once you get past the long name, Ecosil has a very straightforward role in skincare: it improves slip, spreadability, and overall skin feel—helping products glide on smoothly and feel soft, elegant, and refined without heaviness.

What Is Ecosil?

Ecosil is a lightweight emollient derived from olive oil. It’s often used as a natural alternative to silicones, which are commonly added to products to create that silky, slip-on feel many people associate with “luxury” skincare.

Unlike silicones, Ecosil is plant-based and biodegradable. It gives skin that smooth, velvety finish without creating a heavy or coated feeling—and without relying on petroleum-derived or synthetic silicone ingredients.

In simple terms: Ecosil helps skincare feel really good on your skin.

Why Does It Have Such a Complicated Name?

Ingredient labels follow international naming rules called INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). These names are standardized worldwide so formulators, chemists, and regulatory bodies are all speaking the same language.

That often means ingredients are listed by their structure or source—not by a friendly marketing name. A long name doesn’t mean an ingredient is harsh or unsafe; it usually just means it’s being described accurately.

Ecosil is the trade name used by the supplier. The full INCI name is what appears on product labels.

Why I Chose Ecosil

When I formulate, I’m always balancing three things:

  1. How a product feels on the skin
  2. How well it performs
  3. Whether it aligns with my values

I chose Ecosil because it allows me to create products that feel smooth, modern, and luxurious—without silicones, petroleum-derived ingredients, or palm oil.

As someone with extremely sensitive, maturing skin, I’m very selective about ingredients that sit on the skin. Ecosil gives that soft, elegant finish without clogging pores or leaving skin feeling coated. It works beautifully alongside plant oils and botanical extracts, enhancing the experience without overpowering the formula.

Is Ecosil Safe for Sensitive or Mature Skin?

When used thoughtfully and at appropriate levels, Ecosil is considered gentle and well tolerated. It doesn’t exfoliate, tingle, or force the skin to “do” anything aggressive.

Instead, it quietly supports the formula—improving comfort, spreadability, and skin feel. As with every ingredient I use, it’s about balance, restraint, and intention.

Our Ingredient Standards

Every product I make is:

  • 100% vegan
  • Palm oil free
  • Free of silicones
  • Free of petroleum-derived ingredients
  • Free of unnecessary fillers or harsh additives

Ecosil fits seamlessly into this philosophy. It enhances performance without compromising ethics or skin health.

The Takeaway

Not every ingredient with a scientific name deserves suspicion. Ecosil is a perfect example of how modern, plant-derived ingredients can improve skincare performance while staying true to thoughtful, skin-loving values.

Sometimes the most intimidating names are simply doing quiet, beautiful work behind the scenes.

Why Trade Names Don’t Appear on Labels

You may notice that the name you hear from a brand isn’t always what appears on the label. Here’s why:

Cosmetic ingredient labels use standardized INCI names so they’re consistent worldwide. Trade names are often supplier-specific and can vary, which is why they don’t appear on packaging.

Seeing a long or unfamiliar name doesn’t mean an ingredient is synthetic, harsh, or unsafe—it usually just means it’s being listed accurately and transparently.
